Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!
Freedom Over Fear
My country, ‘tis of thee / Sweet land of liberty / Of thee I sing / Land where my fathers died / Land of the pilgrims’ pride / From every mountainside / Let freedom ring!
Freedom – for whom? What liberty?
To live in the land of the “pilgrims’ pride” is one thing, but what it is to be black for some in America is another.
“A land that has been filled with seemingly perpetuated and excusable injustices that targets a whole nation of people” seems more appropriate.
A land full of oppression that cuts so deep, that it drives a person to be willing to trade that very liberty of the “sweet land”, and to administer a “give me liberty or give me death” ultimatum.
The explosive, forthcoming documentary I Am Not Your Negro expounds upon that ultimatum.
Borne from an unfinished thirty page manuscript called ‘Remember This House‘ by the late James Baldwin, I Am Not Your Negro delves into his personal experiences and the assassinations of Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King, Jr.; his close friends.
