Miami Marlins Pitcher José Fernandez Killed!

The Miami Marlins are still mourning the loss of 24-year-old pitcher and friend, José Fernandez.

Fernandez and two other men were killed in a boating accident yesterday, ESPN reports.

The Coast Guard responded to the scene around 3 a.m. Sunday morning to find a 32-foot boat upside down off Miami Beach. Authorities say that drugs and alcohol were not a factor, but high speed is likely to be involved.

None of the men were wearing life vests.

“Sadly, the brightest lights are often the ones that extinguish the fastest,” said Marlins owner, Jeffrey Loria. “José left us way too soon, but his memory will endure in all of us. At this difficult time, our prayers are with his mother, grandmother, family and friends.”

Fernandez’s girlfriend is expecting their first child.
