“Queen Sugar”

“Queen Sugar”
Premiering On OWN!

In today’s society, it seems as though female directors have a difficult time earning the respect that they deserve, especially African American women.

The Award-winning Selma Director Ava Duvernay chose to break through that barrier and now finds herself tasked with yet another project and this time, it’s bigger.

Duvernay was approached by Oprah Winfrey to produce “Queen Sugar”; her first TV series based on the 2014 novel written by Natalie Baszile.

The novel tells a story about siblings who inherited their late father’s sugarcane farm in Louisiana. “I had to figure out how to turn what could have been a two-hour film into a 13-hour series” she shared on OWN.

Even more notable, the series has an all-female directional team!

“Queen Sugar” is set to premiere on OWN this fall. The “Black Girl Magic” is in full force!
